Why Service?
By virtue of our Christian Baptism, we are called to be prophet, priest and king. Through the Christian Service Program, the Knights practice this call. We are are all members of the Body of Christ and are charged with caring for others, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ who are overlooked by others.
30 hours is required not counting any orientation.
- Meets the community needs.
- It enhances your development with responsibility and commitment
- Service shows you how important you really are and it builds self-image
Some things cannot be taught in a classroom.
- Our service is based upon relationships. How to negotiate conflict, be patient and communicate more effectively.
- It puts you in a leadership role whereby you are a role model.
PROCESS IS PARAMOUNT.
- Placement must be OK’D by the service office (Mr. Steve Gray)
- Commitment Form must be signed and turned in immediately to service office
- Evaluation Form must be given to agency supervisor as you begin
- Write your Self Reflection Assessment and following the directions and turn into service office.
- Service is completed - Graduation requirement!
There are many opportunities. The service office is filled with places to serve.
YOUR SERVICE MUST BE COMPLETED DURING YOUR CLASS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE or equivalent if not completed before this time. If you begin your placement in the summer, it must be completed before Registration Day. You do not have a whole school year to obtain your minimum 30 hours . I encourage all of you to do service in the summer if possible. If you participate in sports, musicals, AP courses, have jobs along with your academics your life can be very busy. It is wise to plan your time.
IT IS EXCELLENT TO PUT ON TRANSCRIPTS FOR EARLY COLLEGE PLACEMENT
Scholarships/money have been given as a result of service. Colleges are requiring students to do service-even fraternities/sororities.
WHERE TO GO?
- Tutor those who struggle.
- Participate in programs that benefit developmentally disabilied children / adults
- Facilitate activities for children in summer programs.
- Select a mission trip offered from school or your churches.
- Some of you will be in geriatrics-nursing homes (playing cards, feeding listening to stories of years gone by or filling in for a son/daughter that is not there.
- Help those who are in mental recovery and give support
- Visit the service department for ideas early in the spring.
- Some of you will be redundantly going over material in a library with people who do not understand basic computers or teaching basic reading.
