Why Service?
Why service? Requirement to graduate!
30 hours is required not counting any orientation.
- Meets the community needs.
- It enhances your development with responsibility and commitment
- Service shows you how important you really are and it builds self-image
Some things cannot be taught in a classroom.
- Our service is based upon relationships. How to negotiate conflict, be patient and communicate more effectively.
- It puts you in a leadership role whereby you are a role model.
PROCESS IS PARAMOUNT.
- Placement must be OK’D by the service office (that would be me)
- Contract must be signed and turned in immediately to service office
- evaluation paper must be given to agency supervisor as you begin
- Write your paper and following the directions and turn into service office.
- Service is completed
There are many opportunities. The service office is filled with places to serve.
YOUR SERVICE MUST BE COMPLETED DURING YOUR CLASS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE if not completed before this time. You do not have a whole school year to obtain 30-40 hours. I encourage all of you to do service in the summer if possible. If you participate in sports, musicals, AP courses, have jobs along with your academics your life can be very busy. It is wise to plan your time.
IT IS EXCELLENT TO PUT ON TRANSCRIPTS FOR EARLY COLLEGE PLACEMENT
Scholarships/money have been given as a result of service. Colleges are requiring students to do service-even fraternities/sororities. WHERE TO GO? 1. Tutor those who struggle. 2. Attend a summer with the mentally retarded/physically impaired 3. Facilitate activities for children in summer program. 4. Select a mission trip offered from school or your churches. 5. Some of you will be in geriatrics-nursing homes (playing cards, feeding listening to stories of years gone by or filling in for a son/daughter that is not there. 6. Help those who are in mental recovery and give support 7. Visit the service department for ideas early in the spring. 8. Some of you will be redundantly going over material in a library with people who do not understand basic computers or teaching basic reading.
