General Information

In the event of an injury, whether at practice, game or away from school, early intervention is the best way to insure that the loss of practice or game time is eliminated or minimized. Therefore it is important to communicate any injury/health related problem that you may be having with your coach AND trainer so proper treatment can be initiated and you can resume your sport quickly and safely.

By notifying your trainer as soon as possible we can arrange for a house call if needed, make an initial assessment of the injury, give treatment instructions over the phone and set up a treatment time at school for the next day. This also gives us an early start if we need to contact your family physician or team physician (J.D. Diethelm) for a follow-up or refferal to a specialist.

  • In the case of a severe or life threatening injury CALL 911 or go directly to the emergency room
  • Call Steve Weber at: School (419) 531-1618
  • Call your coach if he is not already aware of the injury.
  • For most musculoskeletal injuries use the RICE PRINCIPLE
    1. REST - rest the injured area of body part, use crutches/slings as needed
    2. ICE - Apply ice to the injury to reduce sweeling. Swelling causes more pain and slows healing recovery time. A one-pound package of frozen corn or peas make good ice packs if no other method is available at home. Generally ice the area for 15-20 minutes every 1.5-2 hours.
    3. COMPRESSION - The use of an Ace wrap or pressue bandage helps to prevent or reduce swelling. Wrap the injured area starting below the injured area and cover the injury moving towards the center of the body. The wrap should be snug, but not so tight as to hinder or cut off circulation. FInger/toes beyond the wrap shgould remain pink and not fall asleep or become numb.
    4. ELEVATION - Elevate the injured area above the level of your heart. Prop up your arm or leg while resting it, this helps to prevent or reduce swelling.
  • Over the counter pain medication may also be used as directed
  • Click on any of the other topics on the left for further information regarding specific injuries or conditions.
