Coach Abele started his rowing career as a freshman at Saint John's High School in 1992. After finishing his novice year he joined the Varsity team and was seated in the A 8 throughout high school where he medaled at numerous races including the Speakmon Regatta and Head of the Hooch in Atlanta, GA. He also raced the Head of the Charles in Boston, MA.
After graduating from Saint John's, Coach Abele was awarded an athletic scholarship at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. Dissatisfied with the program, Coach Abele moved back to Toledo and started the Central Catholic High School Rowing Club in the fall of 1997 with only 8 rowers. Within a few short years he built a successful rowing program with over 30 active team members and helped the team to secure 4 shells, oars and other equipment. Coach Abele also received Level II certification from the United States Rowing Association while at Central Catholic.
