St. Francis de Sales captured the Regional Championship of the Ohio Math League for the 19th of the last 20 years. The region covers northwest Ohio and includes teams from accredited high schools in the counties of Lucas, Allen, Hancock and Putnam. According to Academic Dean Mr. Chris Steingass, “The success that we have is directly related to the pride that our students have in their school and their determination to win each year. This year we had about 250 students participate in the league and 30 of those students were freshmen so it’s really a team effort.”

The league begins competition in October and will have a contest once a month ending in March. Each one of the six contests will have a 30 minute time limit with a total of six questions. The last two questions are more difficult than the first four, while the final question is intended to challenge the very best mathematics student.  Math problems are drawn from a wide range of high school level math concepts including geometry, algebra, trigonometry, logarithms, and sequences.

This year Will Shellabarger, Justin Price, Sam Evola, and Brian Brookover were the top scorers for the Knights.

According to Steingass, who is also a Math teacher and the moderator of the Math Club, “Students at St. Francis are given the opportunity to go as high as they can in Math. We offer Advanced Placement classes in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Statistics. St. Francis has always taught math with a traditional approach.”
