Knight Wrestling Staff


Carl Janke - Head Varsity Wrestling Coach

ImageIn 1987, Mr. Carl Janke was named to succeed Mr. Richard Mattingly as Athletic Director of St. Francis de Sales High School. Mr. Janke’s experience, dedication, loyalty, and knowledge of a variety of sports make him well qualified for this position.

Mr. Janke arrived at St. Francis in the fall of 1978. He was hired to teach physical education and to assist the football, wrestling, and track and field programs. In 1979 Mr. Janke was named head wrestling coach at St. Francis, a position he held until 1987. During that span of time, he coached seven individual regional champions, twenty-one state championship qualifiers, and nine state place-finishers (including one state champion). Under his leadership, the Knights placed sixth at the state championship in 1983 and eighth in 1987.

In 1990 Coach Janke returned to the head wrestling coach position. During the past 16 seasons, the team has finished in the top two at the City League Championship nine times. With his direction, the team has won four team titles (’91, ’92, ’94, ’01) and five runner-up titles (’93, ’95, ’96, ’97, & ’98). In addition, Mr. Janke served as the head freshmen football coach for fourteen seasons and coached field events (shot-put and discus) for the Knight track and field program.

Mr. Janke, a Cincinnati native, graduated from Deer Park High School. There he participated in four sports, lettering in all of them, and was honored by receiving the school’s Athlete Award as a senior. Mr. Janke decided to continue his education at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. While attending Ohio Northern, Mr. Janke was a member of the university’s football, wrestling, and baseball teams. He graduated with a triple major in physical education, health and psychology. In 1981 Mr. Janke earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Toledo.

Mr. Janke and his wife Beth have one daughter, Michelle, SUA ’00, and is a Ohio Northern University graduate, and two sons, Brian, SFS ‘03 graduate, and Joe, an SFS sophomore.


Jim Saba  - Assistant Varsity Coach

Mr. Jim Saba is a 1989 graduate of St. Francis. He has coached 15 years at the high school level, 10 of those at his alma mater. He also was the head coach at Bowling Green High School for two years.

Currently, Mr. Saba works for Black Diamond Lawn Care. He and his wife Jennifer have two children, Allison and Jimmy.


Nick Reiter - Assistant Varsity Coach

First year coach Nick Reiter attended Dayton Wayne High School, where he was a two-time state qualifier , and ranked in the top eight in Ohio. He holds school records for most near falls, pins, and most tech falls. While in high school, he was ranked second in the world in Judo.

He was the assistant wrestling coach at Wilmington University in 2002, and the assistant wrestling coach at Belmont High School in 2003 and 2004. He has been a Judo instructor for seven years, during which he has had 13 state champions and three national champions.

Coach Reiter is currently attending the University of Toledo, where he is majoring in Language Arts/Adolescent Education. He is also a certified police oficer and a United States Judo Association certified sensei.

 


Charlie Blair - Head Freshman Coach

This is Mr. Charlie Blair's seventh season on the St. Francis wrestling staff. In the fall he was also an assistant football coach with the Knights.

Mr. Blair, a 1992 graduate, played football and wrestled for the Knights. Charlie and his wife Tracy have three children, Yalona, Angel, and Semaj.

 


 

Dennis Marzec - Assistant Freshman Coach

Mr. Dennis Marzec graduated from Woodward High School in 1975. In 1980 he graduated from the University of Toledo with a Master's degree in Administration Supervision.

Coach Marzec taught at Springfield for eight years and coached wrestling there for three seasons.

For 30 years Mr. Marzec has been an OHSAA registered wrestling official. He currently serves as a lieutenant in the Toledo Fire Department.

Coach Marzec is married to Dianna and has three children; Chad, Brad and Alex, a sophomore at St. Francis.

 


Dennis Pool - Assistant Freshman Coach

Mr. Dennis Pool graduated in 1995 from St. Francis, where he played football and wrestled all four years. He was captain and state qualifier his senior wrestling season. He coached in the Knights wrestling program in the mid 1990's.

Coach Pool is a 1994 graduate of The Ohio State University, and owner of one of the Netty's Restaurants.

He and his wife Laura have two sons, Ethan and Conner.


Junior High School Club 

Brad Marzec - Assistant Coach

Mr. Brad Marzec begins his second coaching season with the Knights. He brings two years of coaching experience with him as he was an assistant coach at Otsego High School.

Brad is a 2004 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School. He wrestled all four years and was captain his junior and senior years. Brad was a two-time City League Champion, four-time Sectional Champion, three-time State Qualifier and a 6th place finisher in the state of Ohio. Brad is currently a student at BGSU.
