District Meet Toughest in Years PDF Print E-mail

The SFS wrestling Knights fell short this past weekend with all four District Qualifiers competing to qualify for a State birth. The Northwest District Tournament was one of the hardest in years. Only nine wrestlers from our area made it to States as compared to 16 last year. Senior Alex Marzec was the sole district placer. Sophomore Devon McGibbney lost his first match on Friday 8-1 and then scummed in the consolation round 14-1. Junior Kyle Heitmeyer won his first match 6-5 and then lost in the quarter finals 15-0. He then lost in the consolation round to Anthony Wayne H.S. Senior Sam Horvath was also victorious in his first match winning 9-1. He then lost in the quarter finals 15-0. In the consolation round Sam was behind by 9 points when He fought back by putting his opponent on is back in the final seconds as time ran out. Just a few more seconds and Horvath would of pinned his opponent to go on in this gruelling tournament. Senior Alex Marzec Won his first two matches 1-0 and in the second match came from behind with a two point deficit to pin his opponent in the third period with his signature move the sag head lock. Alex broke the school record for most pins again with a school career best at 25. The next match was against the projected State Champ from St. Ed's. Marzec lost 10-2 while almost catching his opponent in his signature move in the second period. In the match that determined a birth to State, Alex lost 3-2 in a tough fought match. Not being able to rebound mentally from this disappointing loss Alex placed sixth at District losing his next match 2-1. With all the hard work and determination that the sport of wrestling demands to get to the top there still is no guarantee that one will get there. Coach Marzec stated that a wrestler still has a chance if he works hard in the off season by wrestling in tournaments, runs and lifts on a regular basis and has goals and dreams. Coach Marzec's wrestling philosophy is simple: seize the moment while you can, with a lot of hard work and determination, a little luck and God on your side you can achieve what you set out to achieve. Set your goals high and always be positive even when you lose. Don't wait for next year because next year might not happen. To all the seniors on the team, the coaching staff would like to thank you for all the fond memories and for your success. May the success that you had in wrestling and the life lessons learned from this sport carry over into your future to make you the best person that you possibly can be. To all the underclass men start running, remember there will be a time next season when someone will ask you or will know what you did in the off season, that someone will be your opponent!
