AcademicsAcademicsHonors Physics ClassThe Honors Physics Class, under the instruction of Scott Secrest, held its catapult spam toss demonstration and competition today. This end of the year project gives the students a chance to combine everything they have learned this year regarding energy and motion into a hands-on design and work project. The longest throw today measured 73 meters. Mr. Scott Secrest Receives Eco-Service Award
The “Eco-Educator Award” for Secondary educators was presented recently to Mr. Scott Secrest by S.A.V.E. Inc. for his work on teaching about energy efficiency and wind and solar power as energy source alternatives. Mr. Secrest graduated with a B.S. in Physics from Miami University and an M.S. in Physics from the University of Arizona. He has taught Honors Physics, AP Physics C: Mechanics, and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism at St. Francis de Sales High School since the fall of 2000, and has been chair of the science department since 2004. Honor Roll for the Third QuarterCongratulations to all of the students who achieved outstanding academic success for the Third Quarter of the 2012-13 school year and were placed on the Honor Roll. Eight Knights took the weekend to participate in a College Vision Trip to Washington D.C. The Knights visited Maryland, Georgetown, Catholic and George Washington Universities. They also had the opportunity to meet alumni Joe Gorski '63 and DJ Manson '85 over dinner. Joe and DJ shared what St. Francis has meant to them, in their school and career choices. This was the third College Vision trip offered in the last 13 months. Lenart Named Commended Student
St. Francis de Sales senior Daniel Lenart was named a National Merit Commended Student by placing among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. These students represent some of the most academically talented students in the country. FBI Agent Talks with StudentsFBI Agent Talks with Students by Patty Slupecki Upon graduation from St. Francis in 1959, Don Yingling attended Xavier University majoring in French and graduated Cum Laude in just seven semesters. He soon began a career teaching French and English at SFS in addition to coaching basketball and baseball. Don was the first graduate of St. Francis to return as both a teacher and coach.
Shortly after beginning his career, Don moved west, to Las Vegas, where he taught French and English at Bishop Gorman High School and again coached, leading the varsity basketball team to the state finals.
